CAPPADOCIA BY BUS
About Cappadocia
Cappadocia is a unique natural wonder located in modern-day Turkey. This region is an enormous open-air museum, astonishing visitors with its breathtaking landscapes. Millions of years ago, volcanoes erupted here, covering the land with layers of lava. Over time, wind and rain sculpted these formations into fascinating rock structures. This is where ancient people built underground cities and carved Christian churches into the rocks.
The Göreme Open-Air Museum is the most popular historical site in Cappadocia, featuring numerous rock-cut churches. The Göreme National Park and the region’s cave dwellings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Underground Cities – These are unique settlements carved into soft tuff rock. They served as shelters for the first Christians fleeing persecution. The first such cities were discovered in the 19th century, and currently, six are known, though there may be more.
Fairy Chimneys – These are fascinating rock formations locally known as Peri Bacaları (“Fairy Chimneys”). Their bases consist of soft tuff, while the upper sections are made of hard basalt.
Hot Air Balloon Flights – One of Cappadocia’s most iconic experiences. Every morning, the sky is filled with dozens of colorful balloons, creating an unforgettable spectacle.
Whirling Dervish Dance – A mystical ritual of the Mevlevi Sufi order. As they spin, the dervishes symbolize spiritual connection with the universe. Their clothing carries deep meaning: the black cloak represents death, the white robe symbolizes purity, and the tall hat represents a tombstone.
